Kibble, the cornerstone of many pets’ diets, has evolved far beyond basic sustenance. Today’s formulas frequently incorporate “functional additives” – ingredients designed to provide benefits beyond core nutrition, targeting specific aspects of a dog or cat’s health.
One of the most prominent areas of focus is gut health. You’ll often see ingredients like prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics, such as chicory root or specific plant sugars, act as food for beneficial gut bacteria, helping them flourish. Probiotics, live beneficial microorganisms, are added to support a healthy microbial balance in the digestive tract, aiding digestion and potentially boosting immunity. Some newer formulas even include postbiotics, which are the beneficial byproducts of probiotic fermentation, offering similar advantages with enhanced stability in dry food.
Joint health is another common target, especially for larger or aging pets. Ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, natural compounds found in cartilage, are frequently added to help maintain cartilage integrity and support comfortable movement.
