It’s that time of year when we reflect on what’s happened in the last year and welcome the new year. Often times, this means gatherings, parties and, of course, fireworks. However, as beautiful as fireworks are, they can pose difficulties for pets.
One immediate step to take if you’ll be setting off your own fireworks is to make sure that your pets cannot touch them. Fireworks can be especially dangerous when ingested. You don’t want to be going to the animal hospital in the middle of your festivities.
However, as most of us won’t be setting off our own fireworks, what can you do about the noise that spooks our pets? A simple help is to move your pet to an interior room with no windows and turn on soft music. If your pet still has anxiety, you can purchase anxiety vests for your dogs. A tight t-shirt can also be helpful.
Finally, if you know that your pet has had issues with fireworks and loud noises in the past, you may want to make a visit to your veterinarian where they can prescribe an anti-anxiety medication. This can go along way to make new year’s better for both you and your pet.
