It’s sad when we see a dog that’s struggling to walk or is out of breath due to their weight. Like humans, dogs (and cats for that matter) can have serious health consequences from being overweight. It also doesn’t help that many dogs will eat anything we give them.
The best indicator of a dog being overweight, besides seeing some of the symptoms above, is to feel how much fat is over their rib cage. If you look at your dog from the side, you should ideally see them being deeper in the chest and tucked up in the abdomen (similar to a race horse). Unfortunately, we don’t have a scale similar to the human body mass index (BMI) to see if dogs are the right weight.
If you do see that your dog is overweight, there are some steps to take, First, take a look to see if you’re feeding your dog as per the feeding instructions on their bag of food. If you’re overfeeding, take it down to the appropriate level. If you’re feeding as per the instructions, try reducing portions by 25% and eliminate snacks and treats. If none if this works, seek out a weight loss food (like PURELUXE’s Healthy Weight formulas) or talk to your vet about some possibilities.
Once you get the weight under control, you should see a happier and healthier pup. Take a look at all of PURELUXE’s formulas, including Healthy Weight dog and cat formulas, at pureluxepetfood.com.
